FARMVILLE, Va. – Houston Baptist gave up two unconventional goals as the Huskies lost to host Longwood, 2-1, Friday evening at the Athletics Complex in Atlantic Soccer Conference action.
Marcos Escobar scored, assisted by
Leonel Munoz for the Huskies. The Huskies were held to just five shots, one on goal, as Escobar led the way with two shots and the only shot on goal.
Kevin Alvarenga,
Kyle Herbison and Munoz each had a shot.
Kevin Suarez took the loss, making five saves and allowing two goals.
Nick Surkamp scored for Longwood. The Lancers had 12 shots, with Zach Crandall resulting in half of them. Crandall had four shots on goal while the rest of the team had two.
Joel Helmick allowed one goal and did not make a save in 90 minutes for the Lancers.
The Huskies, already playing short-handed with
Kristopher Tyrpak and
Walter Kromholz unable to play due to red cards in the Huskies' last match, took an immediate red in the 34th minute to
Mateo Jimenez. Just two minutes after Jimenez's ejection and the Huskies playing with just nine players, the Lancers scored first on an own goal.
In the 41st minute, the Lancers were awarded a penalty kick, as the Huskies fouled Longwood in the box. Surkamp took the PK and scored.
The teams entered halftime with Longwood leading, 2-0, and leading in shots, 4-0.
"We played well in the first half until that red card, which hurt us," said head coach
Steve Jones. "The boys fought hard and I'm proud of them. Kevin made some great saves that kept us only down by two goals. We had some opportunities late in the game that could have tied it. We just have to regroup for Howard."
There was no scoring in the second half until the 80th minute, when Escobar scored on a breakaway. Munoz sent a beautiful pass between two defenders to Escobar, whose initial shot was saved by Helmick. Escobar got the rebound and scored. The Huskies could not get the equalizer in the 10 minutes, though, as Herbison had a shot that just went over the cross bar.
The Huskies played with just eight players with about six minutes remaining in the match, as
Mark Gendi was injured and had to get stitches. Having used up all of their substitutions, the Huskies had to play two men down the remainder of the match.
HBU will conclude the regular season at Howard on Sunday at 1 pm CST.
