Sophomore righthander JT Newton made two appearances out of the bullpen over the weekend, picking up a win and a save, with a 1.59 ERA, six strikeouts and one walk in 5.2 innings. The Bangs, Texas, native picked up the win in the opener against ACU Thursday, allowing one earned run, but with the scored tied and runners on second and third with no outs, Newton got a groundout, a strikeout and a popup to set up HBU’s 8-7 walkoff victory. Newton threw the final 3.1 innings of Saturday’s victory, entering the game with a three-run lead, then shutting out the Wildcats on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks, to notch his team-leading fifth save of the season.
