On the same day she received Great West Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors for her exploits the previous week, Gaines upped the ante on Mar. 30, when she broke the school record in the 100-meter dash with an 11.71 to win her heat at the Texas Relays in Austin. She exploded from the block and was never challenged as she ended up 23rd in a field of 100 of the top collegiate sprinters.
