HOUSTON – As part of the HBU Men's Basketball 50
th Season celebration, the All-Decade Team for the 1980s was announced and honored at halftime of Saturday's game against Lamar at Sharp Gym.
Fred Goporo, Anicet Lavodrama, Randy Martell, Ralton Way and Greg Wise were the five members of the team.
Goporo was a four-year letterwinner at HBU from 1983-1987 and was also a member of the Huskies' NCAA Tournament squad of 1984. He ranks third all-time at HBU with 568 assists and seventh all-time with 151 steals. Goporo has two of the top six single-season assist totals in Huskies' history and led the team in assists for three-straight seasons.
Lavodrama was a four-year letterwinner at HBU from 1981-1985. He helped lead the Huskies to their NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984 and was a member of the inaugural HBU Sports Hall of Honor class of 1997. Lavodrama ranks 10
th all-time at HBU with 1,348 points, fourth with 806 rebounds, third in blocked shots with 161and second in field goal percentage at 60.6 percent. He was a third-round pick by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1985.
Martell was a four-year letterwinner at HBU from 1977-1981 and was selected to the HBU Sports Hall of Honor in 2001. He ranks 25
th all-time in Huskies' history with 1,028 points, ninth with 722 rebounds and 10
th with 129 steals. Martell led HBU with 7.5 rebounds per game during the 1980-1981 season.
Way was a four-year letterwinner at HBU from 1977-81. He ranks ninth all-time in Huskies' history with 1,374 points, seventh with 745 rebounds and is the school's all-time leader with 234 blocked shots. Way led HBU in scoring during the 1977-78 season and led the team in both scoring and rebounding during the 1979-80 campaign. He still holds the single-season record with 85 blocked shots during the 1977-78 season.
Wise was a four-year letterwinner at HBU from 1977-1981, earned All-America honors as a senior and was inducted into the HBU Sports Hall of Honor in 2000. He ranks 11
th all-time in Huskies' history with 1,323 points and led the team in scoring during the 1980-81 season. Along with Martell and Way, Wise was a two-time Trans America Athletic All-Conference selection in 1980 and 1981.
Former HBU head coach Tommy Jones was also on hand to help present the awards and was honored for his service from 1985-1989.
Join HBU all season long as it continues to announce and honor the All-Decade Teams. On Feb. 14 against Sam Houston State, the the All-Decade Team for the 1990s will be announced. On Feb. 28 against Stephen F. Austin, the All-Decade Team for the 2000s will be unveiled and for the season finale on March 7 against Incarnate Word the All-Decade Team for the 2010s will be announced and it will be Senior Night.
