In his freshman year, Rubio posted the third highest score in school history with a 9.95 on parallel bars at the National Independent Championships. He also broke the school record for the pommel horse with a 9.80 and parallel bars with a 9.95. Rubio finished ranked number one in the country in the High Bar and number two in the All-Around in 1988.
