Billings guided the HBU athletics program through its initial membership in the NAIA, the College Division of the NCAA and into University Division I status. He tirelessly worked for the formation and was instrumental in HBU becoming a charter member of the Trans America Athletic Conference. Billings was a former basketball all-star himself at Wayland Baptist, and then in the U.S. Military, he proved his coaching prowess at Cisco Junior College (1955-56) before returning to Wayland Baptist in the same capacity from 1957-62. Ed became Wayland’s Athletic Director in 1964 after receiving his Doctorate in Health and Physical Education at Indiana. A recipient of numerous honors, Billings has served via the Fulbright Grant as a Guest Lecturer to Lahore, West Pakistan in the Government College of Physical Education in 1962-63. He was Executive Secretary/Treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee for the TACC.
